The Wipe Counter (Model 1051) is a rugged, miniaturized system for determining removable radioactive contamination (wipe testing). Although it is priced much lower than Well Counters, the Wipe Counter produces comparable results. Its low cost combined with reliability, accuracy, ease-of-operation and convenience warrant its use everywhere that wipe testing is performed. The Wipe Counter consists of a thin-window Geiger-Mueller tube that detects beta and gamma radiation

A microprocessor converts the data to thousands of disintegrations per
minute (kdpm). The instrument counts 1/2" diameter wipe samples or dry
cotton swabs.
A green light (PASS) indicates contamination less than the present
threshold, a red light (FAIL) indicates contamination hat exceeds the
threshold. In addition to PASS/FAIL indicators, this instrument has a
4-digit LED digital display indicating the level of contamination in kdpm.
The pass/fail threshold can be adjusted for levels other than 2000 dpm for
isotopes such as iodine and other beta emitters which may have a maximum
allowed contamination level limit of only 200 dpm in uncontrolled areas. As
an added convenience, the instrument can be used as a scaler, displaying
counts to three or four significant figures up to a maximum of 999*105.
The selectable counting times are 1, 5 and 20 minutes.
